TGI's tourist guiding course was designed with the culture enthusiast and prospective culture guide in the Western Cape Province in mind. It caters for people who not only have a passion for South Africa's fascinating cultural background, but also wish to share this passion with others.
The theoretical component of the course is conducted in the Northern Suburbs whilst the practical component is offered as compulsory practical guiding sessions held in and around Cape Town.
The course content focuses on the Western Cape region in South Africa.
The TGI Tourist Guiding Course comprises two modules, carefully selected to provide the student with a comprehensive insight into our cultural heritage. The theoretical section consists of lectures on:
• Guiding Legislation
• Safety and Security
• Care for Customers
• Planning an Itinerary
• The Cape Malays
• Xhosa Culture at the Cape
• An Introduction to South African History
• Flora and Fauna of the Fynbos Biome
• An Introduction to the Geography of South Africa
• Marketing Yourself in Tourist Guiding
• An Introduction to the Cape Wine Industry
The practical guiding component is compulsory and consists of five days and four practical guiding experiences in and around Cape Town.
• Monday: Cape Town City Tour
• Tuesday: Peninsula and Cape Point
• Wednesday: Cape Winelands
• Thursday: Township Tour (you will not be guiding) and guiding feedback on the first three days
• Friday: The Overberg
Guiding legislation, expectations and needs of tourists, the role and responsibilities of the tourist guide, professionalism, code of guiding practice, communication, guiding techniques, safety and security, problem handling, emergency action, history, geography, flora and fauna, the Cape Malay culture, Xhosa culture in the Western Cape, route planning and drawing up your own itineraries.
(center>WHO CAN DO THE COURSE?
You need to:
• be over the age of 20, as you can only get a PDP (Public Driving
Permit) at the age of 21;
• be reasonably fluent in English as all course material and
assessments are in English;
• have access to e-mail and the internet for your research,and
• have numeracy and literacy on Level 3 (in old terms, Std 9)
You will:
• receive comprehensive course material for research and study
purposes;
• do assignments within given deadlines based on the course
material received as well as on own research;
• go on five day-trips where the theory is augmented with
practical guiding experience;
• meet people with the same interests and make new friends.
• Own transport to the lecture venue in the Northern Suburbs,
from where we will also depart for the practical sessions
• Access to e-mail and the internet
• Books, pamphlets and brochures on the various topics
• A Level 1 First Aid certificate before you can register with DEAT
• Cape Metropole
• Cape Peninsula
• Cape Winelands
• Overberg
• Breede River Valley
• The West Coast
You can then add the other three Western Cape areas at no extra cost:
• Garden Route, Klein Karoo and Kannaland
• Olifants River Valley
• Central Karoo
Once you are a registered regional guide in the Western Cape, you can add the other 8 provinces through self-study followed by a written examination.
• A learning experience of a life-time
• Life-long learning skills, increased awareness and knowledge of
South Africa's cultural and natural heritage as well as tourism
issues, integrating these to produce multi-skilled guiding
practices
• Practical guiding skills that will enable you to guide visitors
professionally and confidently, to create innovative and exciting
guided experiences
• A nationally recognised qualification on the successful
completion of the course. In addition you will be positioned to
further your learning, practice and career within the guiding
sector. Expansion into other sectors of tourism is also possible.
International students wishing to work in South Africa as a culture guide, please note that work permits in South Africa are reviewed individually. This must be personally managed by the student.
PLEASE NOTE: anyone who wishes to guide in any language other than one of the official South African languages, will need a language certificate issued by a language school, consulate or embassy before you can register with DEAT.
The TGI course fee is R6 495.00. A deposit of R3 000.00 is required with enrolment, the balance being payable before the start of the course.
The following costs are not included:
• The First Aid course, as required by DEAT
• The DEAT registration fee
• Travel to and from the lecture venue in the Northern Suburbs
• Accommodation for out-of-towners
• Refreshments and lunches during the theoretical and practical
sessions
Other provinces can be added at R750.00 per province.
